Candlewood Suites

Fargo, ND

I breed Bengal kittens and was in the area to deliver a kitten to a customer. I picked this hotel because it was one of two IHG hotels in the area that allowed pets. The other one had their pools down for repair so my daughters who traveled with me asked to stay here. I didn't pre book this time because the IHG wasn't showing the room types on the app - it only stated standard room. I decided to just go in and ask what rooms they had. The guy at the front desk was very nice and got us a 2-queen suite at a reasonable rate! Upon entering the room, it was clean and smelled good. A plus in a pet friendly hotel! The kitchenette was clean and stocked with dishes! The only downside is that the cabinets were outdated, and the fridge and dishwasher had visible rust on them. Not a pleasant sight to see. The bathroom was nice and clean, but the door to the bathroom was ugly and heavy. It was awkward to use. The shower was overall clean, but the caulk mess and dings on the floor made it look dirty. The beds were ok, but definitely not the best. The biggest problem I had was trying to go to sleep because the beds weren't top quality and the awful light pollution coming in from outside. It took a long time to finally fall asleep. This is the kind of location that definitely needs two layers of curtains but only had one. The curtains that were there were off the track a bit on one side and let a gap in the middle. Light from the streetlight came in heavily from those cracks and also over the top and bottom. It was quite unpleasant. Then the worst was not over, though. Once finally getting to sleep, I slept in to catch up. Then at 9:30am someone obnoxiously banged on our door yelling room service. I yelled, "we're sleeping." He banged again, yelling room service. I yelled, "we're sleeping." - no response - ugh. I got up and scrambled to the door in hopes this person wasn't going to just barge in on us. When I opened the door, he was wearing a candlewood t-shirt, but he did not have a cleaning cart or anything with him. He awkwardly said we were wondering if someone was still in here, and then he scurried away...what the hell was that?! Do you all give all your customers the shakedown at 9:30 am even though you have a noon checkout time. This incident ended up waking my two years. She was inconsolable for a good 30 minutes or after this and was so rudely woken up. I was kind of pissed really at this awful incident. Never have I experienced such a rude awakening at a hotel in my life. I don't know if this is a regular practice here or if you had some crazy dude show up, but this should never happen! If I didn't check out, then please assume I'm still in my room! Wow! So, in conclusion: an ok place if you need something pet friendly, but otherwise I would stay someplace else until they fix the quality of sleep you'll get here.

Rooms

The rooms were clean and comfortable. However, the room could definitely use a good deep cleaning, some repairs, updates, and better decor. The decor was barely there, giving the room a sterile, depressing feel. It could use a deep cleaning in that the fridge and dishwasher had visible rust on them, making it look terrible. The tub pan in the bathroom looks like someone got crazy with some caulk and never cleaned it off before it settled, giving the floor a dirty look. There were also dings in it, adding to the dirty look. It could use repairs in that the curtain was coming off the track and the shower floor had dings that could be fixed. It could use updates in that the kitchen cabinets had a very dated look to them. The door for the bathroom was very big and awkward and not easy to open and close due to it weight. It should be updated to something more stylish and easier to open. The decor could also us an update in that it barely had any. The curtains weren't fully on the track and didn't completely block out the light - plus the color of them were very drab. The walls could use some pictures to make it feel homier.

Nearby activities

Very close proximity to the mall and movie theater! You could walk there from this hotel if you wanted. There are many other great shops and restaurants in the area as well!

Safety

I mostly felt safe here, and it's a good location. However, when someone came beating down our door at 9:30 am claiming to be from room service, I was concerned. After repeated saying we're sleeping, they kept knocking. When I opened the door, the dude knocking on the door didn't have a cleaning cart and awkwardly said sorry, we were just wondering if someone was in here and then he hurried away. I was left with an irritated feeling of how guests are treated here in the morning. Then I wondered if the person even worked there in spite of the fact that he was wearing a candlewood shirt. Very awful morning wake up either way. It woke up my 2-year-old, and she cried for a good 30 minutes after that because of the rude awakening.

Walkability

The hotel itself is very easy to walk around in! Outside the hotel is easy walking distance to the mall and movie theater.

Food & drinks

There is an area in the lobby where you can buy food and drinks.

Noteworthy details

This hotel is pet friendly, which is why we choose it. The great thing is that in spite of that the rooms are very clean and fresh! There was no evidence of damage from pets, and there were no pet odors at all! They do a good job cleaning up after a pet has stayed!
