Frontenac State Park

Frontenac, MN

Frontenac State Park is a basic, simple low-key park. It is located in a rural part of Southeast Minnesota along the Mississippi River. Compared to many of Minnesota’s other State Parks it isn’t nearly as impressive. However, as a stand-alone park, it has a lot to offer the outdoor enthusiast!

The drive to get here took us down some charming tree lined dirt roads! We definitely felt like we were getting out into nature and away from nearby cities. There were a few houses along the way, but overall, it was a quiet scenic drive to the park.

Once at the park you can stop by the visitors center to obtain a park pass if you don’t already have one. At the visitors’ center you’ll find access to some of the many trails the park has to offer as well as a port-a-potty and a hand pump water well. However, you’ll want to keep driving to get to the main park area.

The main attraction here is the beautiful views of the bluffs along the river. At the main park you’ll find it is nicely maintained with many benches and picnic tables to sit and enjoy the beautiful views of the Mississippi River Bluffs below! There is also a fun little playground made of logs here for the kids!

From here you’ll also find many more trails to take a hike and enjoy the views and the sounds and smells of nature! Just be sure to watch out for snakes! Though rare to spot one the Timber Rattlesnake calls this area part of their home range! There are signs posted to help you identify what they look like!

Overall, it is a nice park to visit if you find yourself in the area and you love getting out in nature!
