Grand Portage State Park

High Fall on the Pigeon River, Minnesota's Highest Waterfalls

Grand Portage State Park on the US/Canadian border is such a beautiful place! The park is very well developed with paved trails and wooden walkways and stairs throughout! There are numerous informational tidbits as you walk along, providing education on the nature and history of the area. Even though the trail is developed, the entire forest it cuts through is in pristine condition! It is a nature lovers paradise - easy to access, yet totally surrounded by the untouched beauty of the forest! At one point on our walk back, I just stopped and listened to all the birds just singing away! It was just amazing to be surrounded by all the energy of the forest and wildlife around me.

Of course, the main attraction here is the High Falls - Minnesota's Tallest Waterfalls! This waterfall is on the Pigeon River which divides the United States and Canada. While viewing this waterfall you are not only viewing the tallest waterfall in Minnesota, but you are also seeing part of Ontario, Canada! They are quite an impressive sight! The walk to get there is fairly easy, but the viewing deck at the end is small. On a busy day/time, you may have to wait your turn to see them and may not get as much time as you like. If you prefer to have time to sit and enjoy their beauty for a while, it would be best to plan an off-peak time to visit! This State Park is in the most Northeastern point of Minnesota, making it a long distance to get to for most, but it is well worth the time it takes to get there! The bonus is that there are many other fantastic state parks to see either on the way to or from here!

Happy Travels! ✌️❤️
