Minnesota's North Shorth Highway 61 Wayside Rests
The Susie Islands Overlook, Grand Portage, Minnesota
This is a scenic overlook stop off of highway 61 in Grand Portage, MN called The Susie Islands Overlook. It is a stunning sight of Lake Superior at Minnesota's Northeastern most point before reaching the Canadian border. I absolutely love the wide open views! It is a must stop location if you find yourself in the area! There is a nice viewing platform to check out the sight. There are picnic tables available if you'd like to grab a bite to eat. The restroom is an outhouse style, but it is clean and well maintained. Parking is easy and convenient!
Cross River Falls, at Cross River Wayside Rest

This is an excellent little wayside rest to see waterfalls if you love and enjoy waterfalls, but don't want to go for a hike and/or can't access some of the trails at the State Parks. You can park in the parking lot and use the sidewalk on the bridge to get a great view of the Cross River waterfalls as they make their descent on the way to Lake Superior! A great experience overall. The only downside is that the traffic can be loud at certain times. So if you are looking for a more quiet time to enjoy the waterfalls it would be best to pick an off peak travel time. There are also restrooms available near the parking lot. However, they do not have running water and are outhouse style. They are clean and well maintained, though.

Nice, clean, and simple Wayside Rest with great views! Parking was easy and convenient right off of the highway. The restrooms do not have plumbing - they are an outhouse style. However, they are clean and well ventilated with hand sanitizer to clean up. There is a hiking trail to stretch your legs and get a nice view of Lake Superior!
